What kid doesn’t want a sign that says “this is my room”, right? I thought it would be fun to do some name illustrations for my nieces and nephew. These were drawn with ink on paper before being scanned and colored in Photoshop. The final product was printed on a heavy card stock.
This one certainly has a different feel. I finally got around to playing with india ink and a brush, and this is what happened.
Watch out. He looks like a hugger.
I started doodling some kind of stone carving or something, and it kind of morphed into this guy. Not sure exactly what he’s up to, but he was fun to draw.
This is a juxtaposition of haves and have nots, old and new, sleek and cluttered. It is also a sketch of a funky cluster of made up buildings. So… very sophisticated.
How do you draw something that is all sticks and strings and give it any kind of visual strength and clarity? This was fun to design, but it seemed kind of busy. I dropped in a dark background to help separate the foreground. Does it work?
Signs are a fascinating design challenge. The need to communicate clearly at a glance, compete with other signs, and actually exist in the real world.

My tendency is to be very ridged and clean with my rendering, so I challenged myself to add some energy and grit to the composition. It seems a little overworked to me, but it was a fun exercise!
In unrelated news: The pens I have been using are giving up after this one.
Combine a drone, a shrimp, and a flying insect and what do you get? Apparently you get whatever this mess is. But he is bringing lunch, so he can’t be that bad. Right?
There are people out there that can render the most amazing and inventive mechs or robots. It is super impressive. This isn’t that, but it was a super fun sketch to do!
